Bernadine R. Dubiel

Bernadine R. Dubiel, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side and her favorite church hymns playing in the background, on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center. She lived with her daughter, son-in-law and husband, who were her faithful caregivers at home over several years. She was born in Syracuse, NY and grew up in the Polish community on the west end, attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School. She worked at Wilsons Jewelers for over 20 years, and also sang with the Frank Waszkiewicz Orchestra in Utica, NY. singing at the Greenview Inn in Marcy, NY, where she met her husband in the 1950’s. She was a loving and devoted mother to her only daughter Julie, and was so very proud of her accomplishments as a Family Physician. Her daughter was blessed to return that love and devotion as her caregiver during the latter part of life’s journey. A lifelong communicant of The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Syracuse, she sang with the I.J. Paderewski choir, Symphonia Ladies Choral Society (president) in Syracuse and soloed with the Filarets Male Choir in Utica, NY. She was a member of the Polish Singers Alliance of America. She was soloist at many weddings, funerals and ordination masses and her beautiful soprano voice graced many other church and Polish community functions. She was a member of the Rosary Society, Sacred Heart Seniors and Sacred Heart Mother’s Club. She and her husband were very active in the Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus; she was 1st president of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was very proud of her Polish heritage and was a member of the Polish Heritage Club of Syracuse and the Polish Community Home on Park Ave. In her younger days, she taught Polish folk dancing to both adults and Sacred Heart school children – who performed at the Festival of Nations. She was a member of the St. Louis Club Folk Dancers and a majorette with the Syracuse Brigadeer’s Drum Corp. She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Edward, and her only child Dr. Julianne Dubiel-Kapusniak (Steve). Also survived by godchildren Bernadine Hastings, Thomas Hastings and David Rozyczko; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. She is predeceased by her father Vincent Rozyczko, mother Julia Przywara Rozyczko, and brother Vincent F Rozyczko. The family wishes to thank the Doctors, Nurses and staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital (2-4, 2-5, PCU), Syracuse Internists, and St Joseph’s and Franciscan Home Care, for their compassionate care.
