Edward Kowalewski

MSG Edward Kowalewski (US Army Ret) 84, passed at home with family in Syracuse after long and courageous battle with cancer. A life long resident of Syracuse, Edward joined the US Army before graduating Eastwood High School. He served in Europe, Okinawa, Japan and Korea and earned numerous military awards and commendations before his military retirement in 1969. He continued his government service working for the Federal Aviation Administration, where he maintained radar and air traffic control systems at Hancock Airport, retiring with 40 years of government service. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially at his lakeside camp in West Monroe. He cherished his time with his beloved dog, Tiger. Ed was a member of the Transfiguration Parish in Eastwood. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 615, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3146, Disabled American Veterans and Air Force Sergeants Association. He is predeceased by brothers Stanley, John, Alex and sisters Alice, Mary, Sofie and Angeline(Nellie). He is survived by his bride of 62 years, Gertraude, sons Edward (Susan) and Paul,;granddaughters Aubrey Picciano and Allison Kowalewski and great granddaughter Olivia, and numerous nieces and nephews. Family residing outside the area includes Dieter (Elke) and Manfred Lischer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:15 AM on Monday, September 21, at Transfiguration Church, 740 Teal Ave. in Syracuse. Friends may call 1-3 PM Sunday, at the Giminski-Wysocki Funeral Home, 1320 W. Genesee Street in Syracuse. Burial: Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
